Now most of us probably think we don't have a problem with Idolatry. I thought so as well. But I searched my Bible about what God says bout Idolatry. I found a lot of interesting things.
What is Idolatry?
Idolatry is when you give someone or something what God deserves. Say you had a great boyfriend. He was like the best guy ever. But you get so wrapped up in him and spending time with him that you fail to keep your focus on God, the One who deserves all your time and thoughts. Or maybe you are a straight A student, always focusing on grades, tests, whatever. You obsess about your upcoming math test and spend all of your free time studying, and neglect your relationship with you Heavenly Father. These are just schools of the MANY examples of everyday Idolatry. Now if you were to look in the Old testament, you would find a lot about Idolatry. But usually rebound of Idolatry they are talking about is the kind when you worship a physical god, such as Baal, Morr, etc.
Exodus 20:3-4
James 4:5
What I Idolize?
What do you spend most of your time doing or thinking about? A boyfriend or your grades? Sports? TV? Facebook? Food? Hanging out with friends? All of these are examples of idols many of us have in our lives that we weren't aware of. Also idols may not be permanent. Can you think of the idols in your life? For me it is probably TV. Sometimes I waste hours of my life watching something that probably isn't good for my spirit. Think about what your idols may be.
How do I get rid of these idols?
Do you know what a fast is? People today use the as a way to keep their minds focused on God. They refrain from eating ( either partially or completely) and whenever they get hungry, they pray and use that time to focus on Him. If food is an idol for you, you could try this. (Don't take it overboard as a means to lose weight. That is not what fasting is for.) Basically this is what you would do for any idol. Say for me, whenever I replace my quiet time with God with watching Television, I can ask god to help stick to my routine. Or if you spend a ton of time on sports and fail to have time with God, maybe you should think about dropping one of your many teams. God doesn't want us to not have fun, He just doesn't want us to put ''fun'' before Him.
Scripture to look over:
Psalms 81:9
Col. 3:5
1Sam. 15:23
Have great week!
